SUMMARY: The Nurse Practitioner’s responsibility is to augment a physician’s ability to provide medical services to patients; collect and document data, conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, order and schedule laboratory studies and professional consultations, and provide direct patient care services. The Nurse Practitioner will work directly with the Medical Director. This is a salaried-exempt, full-time position

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  

The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing backup for the current Provider group and focusing on keeping the infusion center, procedure rooms, and infusion patient service running efficiently. The Nurse Practitioner will also be responsible for building the program for efficient and safe nursing services and will be the resource for the nursing team and performing nursing tasks to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction.  

• Prepares, administers, and documents medications and therapies according to established policies and procedures.  
• Establishes interpersonal relationships with patients; provides information and supporting teaching to patients and families.  

• Perform procedures such as bone marrow aspiration and lumbar punctures with or without administration of chemotherapy, and monitor the progress of patients. 
• Be proficient in procedural sedation and be available to discharge patients for the provider if the patient is ready to go and the provider performing the procedure is not immediately available. 
• Write or edit orders, as situations arise. 
• Prescribe necessary treatment and services for quality patient care; record the normal and abnormal data for review by the Physician. 
• Direct hospital admission placement within the local hospitals as appropriate. 

• Direct and assist with the management and effective utilization of appropriate resources. 
• Discussion of end-of-life preferences, when appropriate. 
• Consultations with sub-specialists. 
• Timely and proactive discharge planning. 
• Discharge patients including ensuring appropriate follow-up is arranged. 

• Resolve nursing team questions and problem-solve any issues with infusion patients and/or infusion orders if the primary provider is unavailable or delayed. 
• Manage triage calls and communicates with the primary Physician/Nurse Practitioner regarding patient status. 
• At the Nurse Practitioner’s discretion, can either see the triaged and/or sick visit a patient or coordinate with the Provider and/or On-call Provider to address the needs of the patient, including writing or calling in prescriptions, ordering labs, and sending to the ER. 
• Available to see the on-call Provider’s infusion patients if requested. 
• Provide education and orientation to the team. 

• Build a program that works with the Infusion Scheduler to ensure an efficient infusion center and procedure schedule. 
• Manage the nurse scheduling assignments to ensure that patient coverage needs are met such as relieving nurses for lunches/breaks and assigning patients to nurses. 
• Acts as a resource for the nursing team by ensuring patient care needs are met, double-checking medications, providing clinical guidance, etc.    
• Communicate effectively with clinical team members.  
• Conduct daily nursing team huddles.  

• Participate in assigned committees (Infection Control, Monday Morning Multidisciplinary Meetings, Weekly Provider Meetings, NCORP, Academic & Progress, Monthly Department Team Meeting etc.). 
• Participate in quality improvement activities, including; 

• Participation in appropriate medical staff meetings, and quality improvement committees; including strategic planning meetings that help govern and expand the horizons of the clinic. 
• Provide leadership in the development and implementation of clinical pathways, protocols, and other clinical effectiveness projects. 
• Participate with Hospital and Clinic staff in maintaining effective utilization and resources management, medical record appropriateness, and appropriate discharge planning. 

• Participate in patient rounding, triage, and disposition to expedite patient flow throughout the organization and assist with patient census management efforts. 
• Participate in all patient safety and Joint Commission initiatives to ensure initial and ongoing accreditation for the outpatient facility, “clinic”. 
• Maintain excellent working relationships with and participate in the implementation and improvement of systems to improve excellent services to patients, Physicians, and other colleagues and hospital staff. 
• Participate in the resolution of patient, parent, and provider complaints and enhancement of patient and provider satisfaction as measured by periodic surveys. 
• Maintain excellent working relationships and communication with the other Physician members of Cure 4 The Kids Foundation, support personnel, Hospital Administration, and Medical Staff leadership.  

• Participate as requested by the Medical Director, in periodic team meetings, email, and/or other communication methods to foster effective working relationships and reduce variation in practice patterns. Including: 

• Complete and maintain adequate and proper medical records with respect to all patients examined or treated in accordance with all legal, accreditation, regulatory, and third-party payor requirements, as well as our own institutional expectations. 
• Comply with all Medical Staff Bylaws and policies, and Hospital Bylaws, policies, rules, and regulations, as such currently exist or are hereinafter amended. 
• Participate as a provider of medical services with third-party payors, including any HMO or PPO, with which the organization contracts. 
• Comply with all applicable statutes, regulations, and other legal requirements. 

• Perform such other services as are reasonably assigned by the Medical Director. 

• Understanding that the Nurse Practitioner will be building subsequent programs along with the Medical Director and may not be the person who will eventually be lead to the program.  
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. 

Infection Control: The Organization’s Infection Control Plan is established to safeguard patients and personnel from the transmission of communicable diseases and other common infections often transmitted between patients and personnel during patient care and while in the environment of care.? All team members are to comply with the organizational infection control policies and standards of hand hygiene.? It is the responsibility of each team member to become familiar with the Organization’s Infection Control Plan to ensure a healthy environment for our patients and our staff. 

Cultural Sensitivity & Diversity: All team members are responsible for maintaining an environment of cultural diversity & sensitivity.? All team members are required to participate in training that focuses on the skills required to provide customer service and medical care that reflects a sensitivity to cultural diversity.  

Pain Management: All team members are responsible for knowing the organization’s pain management standards; these standards address the assessment and management of pain; all team members are required to recognize the right of patients to appropriate assessment and management of pain. 

The clinical team is required to: 

• Screen patients for pain during their initial assessment and, when clinically required, during ongoing and periodic reassessments. 

• Educate patients suffering from pain and their families about pain management. 
• Maintain education about scheduled drugs and proper prescribing patterns. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: The Nurse Practitioner does not provide direct Supervision of specific team members, but acts as a leader to provide direction and support to clinical team members, specifically the nursing department.  

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. • Active Nevada State RN and NP license 
• Active Board Certification 
• 5 years of nursing experience 
• 2 years Pediatric Oncology experience required 
• CPON/CPHON attained or within a year of hire 

• APHON Chemo Certification within a year of hire

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business and medical periodicals, professional journals, financial reports, legal documents, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; efficiently respond to questions from membership, staff and members of the community; communicates effectively in both written and oral form; and, effectively presents information to membership, top management, public group, and/or board of directors 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; exhibit independent judgment in the development, implementation, and evaluation of plans, procedures and policies; and interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. 

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the principles and techniques of research grant administration, hospital administration, principles, and practices of tax-exempt organizations.

However, the most vulnerable of children diagnosed with complex medical issues such as cancer; the uninsured, under insured and medically indigent are often excluded from this opportunity due to their lack of medical coverage and/or the finances required to appropriately treat these childhood conditions. It is not only our policy that no child will be denied care at our clinic for financial reasons; it is our legacy.Unfortunately, the limited access to care in Nevada has become exceedingly more complicated by the current economic status of our region. Unemployment rates have led to alarming increases in uninsured and medically indigent children; children who are fighting for their lives... children whose lives depend on our ability to continue to provide care in spite of the economic crisis.
