A Vascular Access /Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) Nurse is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has certification and expertise in vascular access. Other than the PICC lines, the Vascular Access Nurse also specializes in placements/insertions of other vascular access devices such as but not limited to Midline, Extended Dwell Peripheral Intravenous Catheter (EDC) and Short Peripheral Catheter (SPC)/ standard Peripheral Intravenous (PIV) catheter under ultrasound guidance. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: -3 - 5 years current clinical nursing experience in acute care setting with strong IV Skills. Critical Care or Emergency Care experience preferred. With current BLS and ACLS. -3 - 5 years of experience in placing PICC lines in an in-patient or out-patient setting using ultrasound guidance with tip location ECG Technology. Additional experience with Midline and Extended Dwell Catheter (EDC) line placements preferred. -Must be PICC-Line RN Certified -Prepare and conduct in-service educational programs related to vascular access -Vascular Access-related Specialty Certification preferred: Vascular Access Board Certified (VA-BC) or Certified Infusion Registered Nurse (CRNI). -Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience. Physical Requirements: The position requires light to moderate lifting and carrying (up to 44 pounds), pulling hand over hand (8-12 hours), pushing (8-12 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (8-12 hours), standing (8-12 hours), kneeling (1 hour), repeated bending (8-12 hours), climbing (legs only 8-12 hours), climbing (use of legs and arms), both legs required, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, ability to distinguish basic colors, and hearing (aid permitted). Excellent interpersonal skills are essential as the Vascular Access Nurse requires minimal guidance except in unusual situations. Responsible for obtaining Informed Consent for Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC). You will respond to all consultations for PICC, Midline, and other vascular access device placements, screen those patients for appropriateness/need for a vascular access or recommends alternative IV access. Insert PICC after completing training and PICC insertion competency. Respond to consultation regarding vascular access line complications such as occlusions, malposition and other complications including but not limited to infection, infiltration and extravasation. Provide education and problem-solving strategies for the staff related to IV therapy, PICC, Midline, EDC, SPC/PIV and vascular access line care and management. You are responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient care. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age specific components. Assume responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient transition through the continuum of care, patient and family education, patient self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. Consider all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, and previous experiences. Administer medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influence care outcomes by collaborating with members of the· interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in the unit/program level quality improvement process and initiatives as well as customer service programs. You will assist with difficult IV access and blood draws when needed. Perform chart audits, monitoring and follow-up with staff and providers to ensure core measure compliance. Use word processing software to execute several office automation functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files; inserting and deleting text, formatting letters, reports, and memoranda; and transmitting and receiving e-mail. You will use the Veterans Health Information and Technology Architecture (VistA) to access information in the Medical Center Computer System. Work Schedule: Full-time Monday-Friday; 10 hour tours with AM/PM rotation. 0730-1800 or 1100-2130.
