Position Summary:
Responsible for the assessment and the insertion of PICC lines for patients requiring an intravenous access device. Responsibility also includes coordinating the process of PICC line placements, communication with primary care nurses and providing education for care and maintenance of vascular access devices. The PICC line nurse directs the PICC line process and team members, establishing a positive and professional rapport with other departments and staff, focusing on the provision of individualized quality patient care consistent with organizational standards and goals.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
- Manages and coordinates the care of patients in a defined care delivery model for the placement of PICC lines, utilizing the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Participates in the patient plan of care based on identified patient needs in conjunction with the procedure treatment plan.
- Assesses and prioritizes patient care based on patient needs.
- Completes patient assessment and reassessment following the hospital policy.
- Verifies patient ID and Procedural Consent ensuring that it is in accordance with the physician order, and Site/Side is validated per procedure.
- Inspects patient's skin for rashes, bruises, lesions and old incisions, prosthesis, and implants and assesses patient�s range of motion.
- Verifies history and physical
- Questions patient about diseases, injuries, allergies, NPO status, previous procedures/surgery and anesthetic and/or medication & contrast reactions, and documenting prior to procedure.
- Provides a safe environment and promotes quality patient care through adherence to established care standards.
- Evaluates appropriate intravenous catheter /device to support optimal patient outcomes.
- Assesses the appropriateness for and demonstrates competency in placing PICC Lines using a bedside Ultrasound Machine.
- Reassesses the patient post procedures to include patient�s response to treatment, changes in condition. Provides care and updates plan of care based on those identified needs.
- Collaborates and Communicates effectively with PICC team and primary care staff.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
Education recognized by the State of Florida as qualification for Registered Nurse licensure.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing is preferred
EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience in placing venous access devices. Three (3) years of clinical nursing experience in an acute care setting preferred. Experience placing PICC lines preferred.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE/REGISTRATION:
PICC LINE certification required
Registration and current RN state license,
BLS. ACLS certification, PALS certification is preferred;
